Emotional Susanna Reid tells Arthur Labinjo-Hughes’ grandmother there is ‘special place in hell’ for his killers

Susanna Reid broke down in tears speaking to the grandmother of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes about his murder. 

The six-year-old boy was killed by his father Thomas Hughes and stepmother Emma Tustin in June 2020 after being found with 125 areas of bruising on his body and died from unsurvivable brain injuries.

Arthur’s maternal grandmother Madeleine Halcrow made her first TV interview on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday where she recounted the horrifying abuse her grandchild had suffered leading up to his death, and how Hughes and Tustin had isolated him from his family. 

Speaking about their sentences, with Hughes receiving 21 years for manslaughter while Tustin was convicted of murder and given a life sentence with a minimum of 29 years, Madeleine passionately told the hosts: ‘Life should mean life. 

‘Life should mean life – they took Arthur’s life and he’s not going to get his life back, he’s not going to have children of his own, they took him from my daughter. 

‘Life should mean life, there was no remorse, no sympathy shown – absolutely depraved, sadistic, torturous, evil, calculated people.’

Susanna, who was visibly emotional throughout the interview, told her: ‘There’s a special place in hell isn’t there?’

Madeleine replied: ‘They’ll never go to heaven – they’ll burn in hell. If they get there first.’

Viewers were left in tears after seeing Arthur’s grandmother’s pain, tweeting: ‘Watching poor Arthur’s grandmother on #GMB is just heartbreaking.’

Others added: ‘That Arthur interview was hard to watch’ and ‘My heart broke watching Arthur’s grandma speak about the pain he must have been in, that he was scared for his life. I cannot even comprehend her loss. RIP Arthur.’
