Frank Turner has hit out at the government for implementing its Plan B Covid strategy following the Downing Street Christmas party scandal.

Boris Johnson has confirmed new measures, including a return to working from home, will be implemented from Monday to help stop the spread of Omicron.

Vaccine passports will also be mandatory in a ‘limited number of settings, with specific characteristics’, including nightclubs and crowded indoor venues with more than 500 attendees, and from Friday, face coverings must be worn in cinemas and theatres.

The new rules come after Mr Johnson denied claims there was a Christmas bash in Downing Street during last year’s lockdown despite leaked video footage of his advisor joking about one.

The Prime Minister said he is ‘furious’ after seeing a video of No 10 staff appearing to joke about a secret Christmas party and repeatedly insisted there was no bash and coronavirus rules had been followed at all times.

Singer Frank blasted the state of affairs in a post shared on Twitter, writing: ‘Never been a fan of this government (or many for that matter), but watching this bunch of f*cking pr*cks decimate my career and my industry again in order to cover up their own sh*tty behaviour makes me want to vomit with rage.’

Many of Frank’s fans also expressed their dismay at the regulations and the impact they will have.

‘I have no doubt that these restrictions would not have been rushed out with this level of severity if it weren’t for the fact that they want to bury the Christmas Party story,’ one replied.

‘Expecting most of my work in the run up to Christmas to get cancelled in the coming couple of days.’

Another added: ‘My heart breaks for what they are doing to our arts, all to save themselves, we are all just doomed if we dont get them out soon.’ (sic)

In the wake of Mr Johnson’s Downing Street announcement, Greg Parmley, chief executive of music industry trade body LIVE, said new rules about the NHS Covid pass for nightclubs and venues created an ‘unfair double standard’.

He said: ‘The introduction of Plan B results is an unfair double standard that allows people to go on all-day pub crawls in crowded bars without having to prove their Covid-19 status, whilst live music venues get hit with certification.

‘Across the country, music venues and events already have tried, tested and workable systems in place to ensure that live events continue to be safe – and these remain effective.

‘However, after such a prolonged closure throughout the pandemic it is important the industry is able to remain open and that the Government have listened to the industry and included the use of lateral flow testing in Covid certification.’
