In the game’s closing stages, he made a mistake by missing an elementary tactic with 27 c5, a move that trapped his white bishop in a way that he could not come back. After 3 hours and 51 minutes, Ian resigned to his third defeat, further dampening his hopes of a revival in the championship.

Can Magnus Carlsen defend his title?

Courtesy of that error, the tie was decided at the moment. Magnus made his moves and finished the game, cruising to another glorious victory. When Nepomniachtchi made that shocking blunder, Magnus spoke about how pressure gets to everyone, especially during such a tense situation.

“Pressure gets to everybody. As I said before, no style points awarded. I’ll take it. It was a tough game in which I was under pressure both on the board and on the clock. Just to turn it around like that was unexpected,” said Carlsen.
