Strictly Come Dancing 2021: Wrap party ‘cancelled over Covid fears’ just days before finale

Strictly Come Dancing is said to have axed its upcoming wrap party as worries continue to grow over the spread of the new Covid variant, Omicron.

The hit BBC show has been one of the closest-ever but has also been plagued by issues due to the virus.

Both Craig Revel-Horwood and Motsi Mabuse were forced to isolate for a week, being replaced by stand-in judge Cynthia Erivo.

Contestants Judi Love, Tom Fletcher and his professional partner Amy Dowden also had to do the same earlier this series.

But with the show just over a week from coming to an end, it’s now been reported there won’t be a big celebration in store for those involved in the series, after the wrap party was allegedly cancelled.

A source is reported as telling The Sun: ‘Everyone will be gutted as it’s been such a long and painful series in many ways. There have been injuries, COVID scares and intense competition.

‘Everyone was looking forward to letting their hair down and celebrating what’s been a closely-fought race.

‘It would have also been the first time many of them have been back in the same room since launch, so there would have been plenty to discuss and catch up on.’

However, the source added to the publication bosses have decided to ‘err on the side of caution’ and axe the festive party.

The cast and crew of the show were due to enjoy the bash at Elstree Studios next weekend when the winner will be crowned.

It comes amid fears the new variant of the virus, called Omicron, is continuing to spread with a so-called ‘Plan B’ being drawn up by the government.

It’s thought new restrictions could be announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a press conference scheduled to take place on Wednesday afternoon.

Elsewhere, fans will be tuning in to Strictly’s semi-final on Saturday night, where the four remaining couples will take on two routines each.

Rhys Stephenson, Rose Ayling-Ellis, John Whaite and AJ Odudu are still looking to lift the Glitterball Trophy as they hope to make it through to next weekend’s finale.

But who will become the latest winner of Strictly Come Dancing?

A Strictly spokesperson declined to comment on the reports when approached by Metro.co.uk.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7.05pm on BBC One.
