What is CM Punk’s Straight Edge Lifestyle?

Throughout his time with WWE CM Punk preached a Straight Edge Lifestyle. Not only that, he created an entire stable around it.

In simpler terms, Punk preached a clean lifestyle and dismissed anyone who lived life in a way that went against Straight Edge Society’s teachings.

CM Punk lives his life in a very particular way

In the Straight Edge Lifestyle, Punk preached that one should live a life free of doing drugs, consuming alcohol, and smoking. The idea was to live a life that is free of any form of substance abuse.

CM Punk created the Straight Edge Society on November 27th, 2009. His first recruit was Luke Gallows aka Festus. He helped Festus find the way and work his way to a clean lifestyle. Finally, Luke Gallows was born and became Punk’s primary enforcer.

Straight Edge Society had a unique induction process

Whenever Punk inducted individuals to the stable, he would shave their heads. This represented the beginning of a new life. He would often bring in individuals (kayfabe fans) from the audience and recruit them to Straight Edge Society.

An interesting moment was when a woman from the audience begged Punk to induct him. Instead of having her escorted, WWE allowed Serena to continue and Punk shaved her head.

Over time, Straight Edge Society became utterly famous for their preachings. Some thought this was just a storyline but Punk claims that is his real lifestyle.

Coming to the disbanding of the stable, it happened on September 3rd. Punk lost a match against The Big Show, and took out his frustration on Luke Gallows. On September 24th, Gallows claimed he would defeat Punk and celebrate with a beer.

However, Punk won and soon afterwards Gallows was released. That was the end of Straight Edge Society.

Punk revealed the difficulties of living the Straight Edge Lifestyle

During an interview, Punk revealed that there were times he had to engage in conversation to explain why he did not want to do what others usually did at parties.

“There’s a lot of bullies in professional wrestling and a lot of it comes down to people being taught by the previous generation to hold onto your spot,” started Punk “‘Somebody’s gonna take your spot, the young guys are coming up. They’re gonna take your spot.’ So me coming in, I was a threat to a lot of guys and me being straight-edge, not drinking, not doing drugs, I was a threat to other guys. They didn’t get that. They would try to bully me into – like weird peer pressure like, ‘Have a beer!’ I’m like, ‘I don’t drink.’ ‘Well why? Why don’t you?’ Just weird stuff that grown ass men should not be participating in. But I got thick skin.” H/t Cultaholics
