Dr Hilary Jones has urged people to be more careful than the government guidelines suggest, hitting out at Boris Johnson’s advice.

Under the newly announced restrictions, people are being advised to work from home if they can, but Christmas parties can still go ahead.

‘It doesn’t make any sense to me, it’s very illogical,’ Dr Hilary told Lorraine Kelly, with the healthcare worker acknowledging that moving to Plan B is still a good thing.

‘The leaders should be leading by example, they’ve got to do that. But actually, my message to everybody else would be don’t necessarily follow what the government is saying,’ he added.

‘If you want to do the maximum for your own health protection and those of others, just be more sensible than they have shown.’

Lorraine also referenced the reports that there was a Downing Street Christmas party last December when London was in tier three lockdown.

‘You can understand people’s complete frustration and anger,’ she said, with Dr Hilary agreeing: ‘Totally.’

The Prime Minister has denied a party ever happened.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mr Johnson confirmed the move to ‘Plan B’ following the emergence of the Omicron variant.

The Prime Minister confirmed that he was advising a return to working from home from Monday, ‘if you can’.

Vaccine passports are also being introduced in ‘certain settings’, including nightclubs – but Mr Johnson again ruled out mandatory vaccines.

More: Coronavirus

That means the NHS Covid pass will be made mandatory in England in a week’s time for venues where large crowds gather – including sporting events.

The requirement to wear face masks will also be extended to ‘most indoor settings’, including theatres and cinemas, from Friday.
