Nadia Sawalha was quick to criticise the plans for new Covid restrictions announced amid Allegra Stratton’s resignation over her comments of an alleged Downing Street Christmas party in December 2020.

The Loose Women panel soon got on with discussing the biggest talking points of the day and couldn’t help but address the bizarre ongoing news cycle.

The PM’s former adviser announced her resignation in a tearful speech outside her home on Wednesday evening.

It followed mounting pressure after the leak of a video obtained by ITV News, in which Number 10 staff joked over an alleged Christmas party held at Downing Street.

The footage showed Stratton answering questions at a mock press conference on December 22 about a party the previous Friday – the date of the alleged rule-breaking gathering last year.

Shortly afterwards, the PM called a press conference to announce new Plan B restrictions, which will come into place from Monday, December 15.

Addressing the plans on Thursday lunchtime, host Charlene White explained: ‘This Plan B is needed to stop daily hospital admissions in England, currently averaging 682, from peaking above 2000.

Turning to Nadia, she asked: ‘You think the timing isn’t right?’

Nadia was quick to give her thoughts, responding: ‘I mean yesterday… are we stupid? Come on!’

Speaking at the press conference yesterday evening, Johnson addressed his adviser’s resignation and said: ‘I think Allegra has been an outstanding spokesperson for the government, for COP.

‘I’m very very sorry to lose her. I wish her all the very best and we will miss her here in government.’

Nadia also expressed her shock over the news of Boris and Carrie Johnson’s new arrival, which came just hours later.

‘And then a baby in the evening?’ Nadia continued, ‘I can’t believe it, you couldn’t write this – it’s like a movie!’

It was confirmed Carrie gave birth to a ‘healthy’ baby girl on Thursday morning, her second child with her husband, the Prime Minister.

On Wednesday’s show, the Loose ladies gave out critiques after Mr Johnson continued to insist there was no Christmas party in Prime Minister’s Questions.

Host Christine Lampard said: ‘I just find it really deeply upsetting.’

She recalled watching the press conference about the Christmas restrictions when she was pregnant, realising she wouldn’t be able to see her family.

‘I was absolutely devastated,’ she said, adding that she can’t imagine how people who couldn’t see relatives in hospital must have felt.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
