WWE has released Jeff Hardy.

The former world champion, who became one the most beloved superstars in the company’s history after building a rich legacy as a tag team alongside his real life brother Matt and then as a solo star, has been let go four years after returning for his most recent stint.

As reported by Fightful, Jeff was released days after being sent home from touring after appearing ‘sluggish’ during a match at a recent live event.

On Saturday, he appeared at show show in Edinburg, Texas as he teamed with Drew McIntyre and King Xavier Woods to take on The Bloodline’s Roman Reigns and The Usos.

As reported by PWInsider and corroborated by Fightful at the time, Jeff tagged out of the match and ‘disappeared into the crowd’, where he was followed by security.

In a fan-shot video uploaded on social media, the 44-year-old star can be seen leaving the ring during the match, and not returning to celebrate with his partners after their win.

Matt had previously updated fans and said his brother was doing ‘OK’ after the incident, and on Wednesday night – before the reports of the release – he tweeted: ‘My brother, Jeff Hardy, has the best heart & soul of any human being I have ever met.’

Following the news, current WWE Champion posted a heartfelt tribute to Jeff and said he wishes ‘him and his family the very best’.

He tweeted: ‘Jeff Hardy is so beloved by his fans and his peers. I’ve never heard a negative word about him & he’s always treated me with such kindness. Just wishing him and his family the very best.’

‘Thank you for your hunger, your passion, your dedication and your loyalty to your family. Praying for you. Praying for them. #ForTheBest’
