“Giving Him Tools to Untrap”: Coach Opens Up on Hubert Hurkacz’s Match Against Roger Federer
The Polish professional tennis player, Hubert Hurkacz, had a wonderful 2021 ATP season. The 24-year-old reached his career high ranking of World No. 9 and won three ATP titles, including a Masters. But perhaps the most notable moment was at Wimbledon 2021, when he defeated the legend, Roger Federer, in straight sets.
Recently, the coach of Hubert Hurkacz, Craig Boynton, discussed this emphatic win. The American believes Hurkacz knows how to overcome challenges.

The American Craig Boynton has been coaching Hubert Hurkacz since March 2019. Under the guidance of Boynton, Hurkacz has triumphed over several ATP titles and put up notable performances. The Polish also reached his career-high rankings of World No. 9 in November 2021.
At Wimbledon 2021, Hurkacz played possibly the biggest match of his young career, beating Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of the competition. Recently, in a podcast, Craig talked about this majestic win.

Craig Boynton said, “And I told him what’s coming when his match against Roger. Like this is what’s coming. You are not gonna be able to hear yourself think. The whole world doesn’t want to watch Roger lose. And he says to me after match CB, did you hear how loud it was.”
Hubert handed Roger his first bagel at the tournament since he started competing there in a 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 defeat. Federer is the record holder, 8-time champion, at SW19.
In addition, the American quoted, “But I knew until he experiences it for himself that he’s not gonna be able to own it. And so it’s just talking about what’s happening, talking about who he is, what makes him great, what traps that he gets in when he gets trapped, and giving him tools to untrap himself.” Certainly, the coach is quite impressed with the kind of performance the Polish pro is registering.

Federer’s comeback is still uncertain

Roger Federer had to undergo a knee surgery after Wimbledon 2021. Since then, the 20-time Grand Slam winner hasn’t recovered enough to return to the tennis courts. His return to competitive tennis is still uncertain as he cast doubts about his involvement even at next year’s Wimbledon.
We wish Federer a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ATP Tour.
