“Wouldn’t Be a Serena if There Wasn’t a Venus”: Serena Williams’ Agent Details the Impact of Venus on Her

American tennis players Venus and Serena Williams are exceptional athletes. The sisters have had an unprecedented dominance on the WTA Tour over the past two decades with 30 Grand Slam singles titles between them.

Recently, Jill Smoller, agent of Serena Williams, reflected on the unique qualities that both the sisters possess. The interviewer stated that “real tennis fans” thought that Venus would become the better player out of the two. However, it was Serena who turned out to have the more successful career.

Venus Williams and Serena Williams know each other in and out

Having been born and brought up in the same house, both sisters are well versed with each other’s games. Even today, Serena mentions Venus’ name as one of the toughest opponents she has faced in her career. Had Venus not been around, Serena would not have reached the same level and the younger sister is the first one to accept that.

The mutual respect between both the sisters for each other is immense. Speaking about the William sisters, Jill stated, “Serena will always say that Venus is her hardest competitor. They know each other so well, they know each other’s games inside out, they practiced every day and I think whenever she’s asked her fiercest opponent, the answer is always Venus. “

The American agent continued, “There wouldn’t be a Serena without Venus and Serena is the first one to say that, she paved the way for her. Venus is the most gracious older sister, always so protective of Serena.. Venus is elegant in defeat, Serena not so elegant in defeat but it’s what makes her who she is.”

Jill made an interesting point about the contrasting nature of the two sisters, stating that Venus was gracious in defeat while Serena hated losing. She even stated that Serena hated losing more than she liked winning.

Coming to tennis, both sisters did not have the best season this year. According to their high standards, they failed to match up the success this season. Nonetheless, we wish both players the very best for the upcoming 2022 season.
