Your guide to the Hollyoaks McQueen family tree from Jacqui to Sylver

The McQueen family first appeared on Hollyoaks in 2006 and have been at the centre of dramatic storylines over the years.

Here’s a little breakdown of each of the major chaotic characters in the McQueen family.

The family tree as we know it begins with:

Marlena McQueen (1946-)

Nana McQueen can often be seen behind the bar sporting bold blonde or pink hair

Marlena is a blonde, fun-loving, no-nonsense character played by Diane Langton.

She first appeared on Hollyoaks in 2007 as Myra McQueen’s mother.

Her mother, Queenie McQueen is referenced on the show as a former suffragette.

She is known for running The Dog in the Pond pub alongside her granddaughter Mercedes.

Myra McQueen (1966-2019)

Actress Nicole Barber-Lane left the show in 2019 in search for new horizons

Myra is recognised as the head of the McQueen family.

She is well known for standing up for her family as well as being the necessary mediator whenever the family feuds.

Myra left the show in 2019 and with actress Nicole Barber-Lane sharing she ‘wants to do something different.’

Jacqui McQueen (1982-2013)

Jacqui is best known for her tough girl persona.

She has starred in several major storylines such as being a victim of a sexual assault at knife point, a sham marriage and the loss of her daughter Phoebe McQueen.

She has been married to both Aleksander Malota and Rhys Ashworth with whom she adopted Phoebe.

Phoebe tragic death in 2015 came as a result of being injected by serial killer Lindsey Roscoe with a lethal dose of potassium chloride.

Claire Cooper, the actress who played Jacqui, won the coveted best actress gong at the British Soap Awards in 2013 and left the soap the same year.

Mercedes McQueen (1983-)

Mercedes has had the chance to star in some truly iconic storylines.

The seductive character is best known for having multiple affairs with:

Mercedes, played by Jennifer Metcalfe, has been married a total of six times and was responsible for killing her husband Paul Browning – a violent murderer who attempted to kill her mother on several occasions.

Arguably the most memorable and controversial McQueen, Mercedes faked her own death by setting up Freddie Roscoe despite the fact characters Grace Black and James Nightingale were the ones responsible for her shooting.

Carmel McQueen (1987-2014)

Carmel, played by Gemma Merna, was the most lovable of the McQueen sisters.

Her father was Ricky Bowen meaning she was a half sister of Jacqui and Mercedes.

She married Calvin Valentine, who, later cheated with her sister Mercedes and she was engaged to Jim McGinn and later Sonny Valentine.

The blonde bombshell unfortunately met her demise in 2014 as she attempted to save her cousin Theresa in a train crash.

John Paul McQueen (1989-)

John Paul, played by James Sutton, is yet another iconic member of the family who has starred in a number of noteworthy storylines.

Many of these storylines have been centred around his sexuality for which he has been received great praise for from fans and also from LGBT rights charity Stonewall. 

It was revealed in an unexpected storyline 2016 that John Paul’s boss, Sally St Claire – a transgender woman, was actually his biological father.

In 2021, it was also revealed how Sally St Claire was responsible for killing George Kiss – John Paul’s partner.

John Paul was married to Ste Hay from 2014 to 2017 and was previously engaged to Kieron Hobbs in 2008, James Nightingale between 2016 and 2017 and later George Kiss in 2021.

Theresa McQueen (1993-)

Theresa, played by Jorgie Porter, first appeared on the soap in 2008.

She was the centre of several dramatic storylines such as the murder of Calvin Valentine, her teenage pregnancy and also a storyline in which she was the target of a serial killer.

Her most recent storyline revealed how Theresa and her partner Seth blackmailed her own family in order to make money to start a new life together.

The wild storyline concluded with Theresa being disowned by Mercedes after it was revealed she was the culprit behind the blackmailing scandal.

Tina Reilly (1984-2008)

Tina was born to a 19 year-old Myra as a result of a one-night stand with a married man named Marvin Bassman.

Following a dramatic series of events, Niall, her half brother, kidnaps her and ties her up in an abandoned church with all the McQueen sisters.

When Jack and Darren Osborne, Tony and her husband Dom arrive the church to save the McQueens, Niall detonates explosives.

Fortunately, all the McQueens survive and begin to exit the church.

As the floor collapses, Tina is trapped under the rubble.

In her dying breath, Tina tells Dom how much she loves him.

Actress Leah Hackett has also appeared in Casualty (2016), Doctors (2010-2012) and Coronation Street (2014).

Michaela McQueen (1991-)

Last but not least, Michaela, Carmel’s full sister, is the daughter of Myra and Ricky Bowen.

When the character attempted to reconnect with her father, Ricky, he apologised for being an absent father and blamed Myra.

After bringing him to the McQueen home during Christmas, he stole the family’s gifts under the tree and disappeared leaving Michaela distraught.

Michaela and Sonny Valentine’s relationship ended before it began after she found out he had been bragging about sleeping with her older sister Mercedes.

They later got back together but split when he decided to leave the village.

Actress Hollie-Jay Bowes was eventually axed from the show for revealing storylines on Twitter in 2010.
