You’ve been washing your Xmas jumper all wrong – how to make sure it NEVER bobbles, expert reveals

TODAY, 10th December, marks the day when we finally get to bring out our favourite Christmas jumpers.

Although we will probably wear them for the next couple of weeks, it’s also important to wash them properly – and an expert has revealed the top tips on how to make sure they never bobble.

“There aren’t many things more frustrating than when your favourite jumper comes out of the washing machine covered in tiny bobbles,” says Luke Hodson, founder of Awesome Merchandise.

These knotted pieces of fabric, he adds, are difficult to remove and can change the appearance of the jumper.

However, as common as they are, there are also a couple of things you can do to prevent your favourite jumper from getting ruined.

His first tip is washing fabrics separately.

“Man-made fibres, such as polyester, are most susceptible to pilling due to the electrical charge that’s produced when rubbed against other fabrics.

”One simple way to prevent this is by washing fabrics separately, in order to reduce the number of loose fibres running around the washing machine,” he explains.

As well as separating the different fabrics, you should also pay attention to the detergent you typically use.

Luke points out: “We’d recommend using a gentle liquid detergent on your jumpers because not only are they better for the environment, they prevent loose gritty particles that are associated with powder detergent from floating around the basin.”

Together, this helps to stop the abrasion on your Christmas jumpers during the wash cycle.

When it comes to washing, especially during busy periods, it can be very tempting to chuck a big load into the washing machine.

But although you might think that this is effective, Luke shared that doing so ”will only cause the garments to rub alongside each other and increase the chances of long-lasting damage”.

”Another very simple hack is to turn your clothes inside out before placing them in the washing machine, helping to remove the visual impact of pilling.”

However, sometimes even despite your best efforts, these annoying bobbles will somehow find a way to call your jumper their home.

No need to worry – Luke adds that there are plenty of ways of removing them.

”We’ve seen a lot of people opting for the viral Tik Tok trend that uses a razor blade to shave off the bobbles from your clothing and although this is effective, it does come with risks.

“Instead, invest in a good-quality clothes fabric shaver, designed to closely remove the fibres from your clothing and leave minimal damage to the overall appearance of the garment.”
