Call The Midwife star Stephen McGann gave fans of the BBC show some very interesting insight into the creative process of the show’s creator Heidi Thomas, who he’s been married to for over 20 years.

Stephen has played Dr Patrick Turner in the show since it began back in 2011 and has no signs of stepping away from the beloved programme just yet.

The cast and crew filmed the latest series and Christmas special under strict Covid protocols to ensure viewers would be able to get their latest dose of the show.

But despite series 11 of the show coming imminently after its release date was confirmed, Stephen promised not to give anything away and teased some huge twists to come.

Speaking recently to press including Metro.co.uk, he said: ‘Well, we’re not gonna tell you any details, except to say that it’s big, it’s brilliant and it is a real challenge.

‘I think for people who watch the show, I think it’s a departure, it’s different, i’s ambitious,’ teased the star, as he tried not to let slip too much detail.

‘It’s one of those things, and everybody in their way, is affected by it – everyone comes into its orbit.

‘[Heidi’s] infuriating like that, she can’t tell you, but it’s smashing, it’s great and it shows us again, going on and on with this with this thing and finding new things

The actor went on to give out all the gossip about Heidi’s writing process, giving touching insight into just how she’s managed to keep the show going for so long.

I’ll little secret about Heidi,’ he continued, ‘Talking about longevity of the show and every time this comes out, she will go home, say today or tomorrow and she will do the same thing… she looks at the blank page.

‘While [the cast and crew are] all celebrating finishing a series, she has a blank page, she’s got to do it all again, each year.

‘I’ve even said to her privately said, “How do you it?” She goes upstairs, vanishes for few weeks and then comes down.’

Stephen went on to explain when he quizzed Heidi on just how she does it, she gave a very sweet response.

‘She says this lovely thing, he continued. ‘She said, “Well, I go up, and I feel this tension and then it’s like voices say to me – it’s not spooky, it’s just like in her head – it’s like someone from history says to me, mainly women who are voiceless, say, tell my story, you haven’t told my story yet.

‘”Tell the story of what happened to women like me, or tell the story of what happened to people like me, or orphaned children.”‘
