Love Island star Demi Jones has shared the joyful news that she is now officially cancer-free.

The 23-year-old has experienced a devastating year after learning she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer

On Monday, she shared a photo of herself standing outside the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth while flashing a beaming smile after being declared free of the disease.

Demi wrote in the caption: ‘I’M CANCER FREE!!!! I did it! 🥺🎉 I got my full body scan results back and there’s not a single cancer cell left in my body 🙌 it’s been such a difficult year mentally and physically for me with my surgeries and treatment but I’m beyond grateful for everyone’s kindness and support over this past year 🙏.’

She added: ‘I will continue to be an advocate for cancer awareness and all my love and strength goes out to those who continue to fight this awful disease, here’s to a healthy and happy 2022.’

Demi was congratulated by several of her fellow Love Island stars, with Liberty Poole commenting: ‘The best news.’

Paige Turley wrote: ‘The best news ever 🤍🤍🤍 Such a strong girl!’

Jess Gale said: ‘the best news❤️ love you so much,’ while her twin sister Eve added: ‘Love you so much.’

Yewande Biala and Geordie Shore’s Holly Hagan supportively commented strings of heart emoji.

Demi announced in May that she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer after undergoing surgery to remove a lump from her neck which she first noticed in January 2019.

The reality star opened up about her health battle in an interview with Metro.co.uk, and recalled how discovering the lump ‘engulfed’ her life while she was studying in her third year at university.

She explained: ‘Then six months later once I’d finished and had my degree, I mentioned it to my mum and she went into panic mode and was like, “What the hell? Why haven’t you said anything?” Went straight to the doctors and apparently it’s very common – 1 in 3 women have a thyroid nodule but they said it looks good, we’re sure it’ll be fine.’

In January 2020, Demi entered the Love Island villa for the winter edition, and after shooting to fame on the show, she began working with brands like Missguided. However, later in the year, she noticed that the lump had grown.

Her father’s own cancer battle pushed her to get the lump checked again.

She said: ‘When you’re a young girl you’re more worried about boys and going out with your friends than checking for lumps and bumps, but it’s only because it’s something prominent on my neck that I knew it was an issue and unfortunately my dad had a lump and he developed cancer so I knew you need to keep a check on these things.’
