The real reason Carrie didn’t call 911 to save Mr Big in And Just Like That has been revealed

Sex and the City fans were left heartbroken by the opening episode of the reboot And Just Like That… but it turns out there was a reason for it all.

It might be hard to believe, but show creator Michael Patrick King has explained the decision to not only bump off Mr. Big (Chris Noth) in the first episode, but also for Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) to not dial 911 right away.

Even Jonah Hill has been asking that very question, and now we have an answer after Entertainment Tonight journalist Lauren Zima spoke to Michael last week and found out why everything played out the way it did.

Taking to her Instagram Story, she said: ‘I asked him about Carrie not calling 911 because I think many of us have had this reaction, we’re watching the scene going, “Carrie pick up the phone!”

‘And he told me that that scene is supposed to be a split second for Carrie. What we’re seeing – Carrie looking at him – time’s frozen. He wanted to play the moment out to have us all feel the paid, but that for Carrie it’s just a second.’

That actually makes a lot of sense – and it’s not the only mind blowing detail you may have missed in that scene.

Michael is said to have been keen to highlight Carrie’s evolution and resilience, and there were some big decisions made with her costume as she ran to Big.

Her wedding shoes blow off, while she’s also wearing white and the ‘Carrie flower’, which were all details the show’s boss was keen to get in there.

As for why Big had to die at all, it turns out we can also blame Michael for that, as it was ‘his idea’ to go with such a shocking and raw moment.

Lauren added: ‘The reason that Big needed to die is because the show’s always been about these real moments and real struggles, and because the core issue at the show’s heart… is the most important relationship we have is the one we have with ourselves.

‘So, he wanted to see Carrie explore herself again through this huge loss.’

It’s safe to say a lot of fans were devastated by Big’s death, but it turns out that was the whole idea, with Michael seeing that as another key part of the what makes the show so special.

‘He says he knows we’re upset,’ Lauren explained. ‘He said he loves we’re upset because that’s part of what made the show the show.’

And Just Like That is available to watch on Sky Comedy and NOW.
