Star of new Channel 4 documentary Naughty & Nice: Sex Toy Britain, Jess Megan, has spoken about her sex positive journey, saying that it all started when her mum bought her a vibrator.

The new film, which airs on Channel 4 on Tuesday night, follows the run in to Christmas for online sex store Love Honey, and takes a closer look at the UK’s attitudes towards adventure in the bedroom.

Jess is one of the main contributors on the programme, with a career as an influencer and sex toy tester with more than half a million followers on Instagram.

Naught & Nice sees her speak about her own experiences, revealing that it was her mum who first bought her a sex toy and set her on the path of spreading positivity about sex.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Jess admitted: ’It was something I never wanted to speak about, because I was concerned how it would look.

‘But just by doing that, she gave me access to understanding my body in a much deeper way. When I went onto my journey with having sex, it meant that I knew myself better. I wasn’t open to being treated badly and I wasn’t putting up with things that hurt or were painful, which so many women do.’

‘I knew how to go into sex with a more like more proactively, as opposed to being a passive person in that in that dynamic.’

She added: ‘It’s no different from parents giving their son their first condoms… you want to keep your child safe. Safe sex didn’t just mean not getting pregnant and not getting an STD. It also meant knowing their body and understanding their body more deeply.’

Jess has always been refreshingly honest with her followers, and she noticed early on in her career that she could be a force for good within the industry.

‘I started out as a model,’ she said. ‘I was like a size 10. But in the industry I was working in, that was considered plus size, which I thought was absolutely wild. That just doesn’t make any sense to me.’

‘I posted my modelling pictures online and I tapped into an audience there, where I realised that I had influence there. Women were coming to me and saying, “You make me feel better about my body.”

‘It felt really good to be able to actually do something helpful. So that was what I gave my life towards. From that point on, it stopped being so much about modeling and it started being more about helping women start feeling liberated, to start feeling like they can move around their bodies without feeling constantly scrutinised.’

Jess hopes the film, which focuses on attitudes towards sex toys and discussing sex in society, gets people talking.

‘We know that people are using sex toys, we know that they’re masturbating, we know that they’re having sex. So let’s talk about it, because ultimately when we don’t talk about things, it leaves space for abuse to fester and thrive’

‘Even if someone says, “Oh, that’s really weird, her mum bought her a sex toy. Would you do that,” then it opens up that conversation. That’s great. So it’s just about getting people talking.’

Naughty & Nice: Sex Toy Britain airs tonight at 10pm on Channel 4.
