Michael Jordan Continues To Break Records As His NBA Debut Ticket Fetches Historic Amount

The legend of Michael Jordan continues in the NBA to this day. He has been pivotal throughout his time in the league and still is, 20 years after his retirement. His most recent collectible being sold for a whopping price, even now, is a testament to his greatness.

In fact, this auction added another incredible record attached to his name.

The six-time NBA champion’s debut ticket at Huggins & Scott Auctions was sold for $264,000 on Friday. This is the most anyone has ever spent on buying a collectible sports ticket. In fact, the original bid was $220,000 but a 20% buyer’s premium attached to the deal further increased the price.

Before this, the most valuable ticket ever sold was Game 3 from the first World Series in 1903. It was Game 3, between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Americans, that ended with Pittsburg’s 4-2 win. In October, it was sold for $175,000, a record Jordan has surpassed.

This is not the first time that one of his memorabilia has smashed records. As a matter of fact, his rookie season game-worn sneakers broke his own record by being sold for $1.472 million in October.

Can you imagine? This is a man who last played in 2003 but continues to lead a fan-following willing to spend millions to hold on to his souvenirs.

How did Michael Jordan play in his debut game?

October 26, 1984, is an iconic date in the history of the NBA. It was Jordan’s debut as a player for the Chicago Bulls against the Washington Bullets. The No.3 pick in the draft showcased a hint of all the talent that was yet to be seen in his prolific career.

He played 40 minutes in his very first game and finished with 16 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 2 steals. Not only did he leave a mark instantly but the 109-93 victory against them was the cherry on top. However, it was Quintin Dailey and Orlando Woolridge that paved the path for this victory with their 25 and 28 points, respectively.

Jordan’s rookie season was a big hit. He averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.4 steals per game, helping him nab the Rookie of the Year award from Hakeem Olajuwon. He even landed his first All-Star and All-NBA selections.

More than 13,000 tickets were sold that day, however only one of them was in a condition to be labeled a collectible. However, nobody could have foreseen the legend that Jordan would become after his debut. If that would have been the case, a lot of those ticket stubs would have been taken care of.
