Robert Lewandowski equals Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring record in final match of 2021… with just THREE-MINUTES left
ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s career-best tally of goals in a calendar year last night.
Ronaldo‘s career year came in 2013, when he netted 69 goals in 59 games for Real Madrid.

Lewandowski matched that tally against Wolfsburg, but left it late.
Bayern led their mid-table opponents 3-0 going into the closing stages, courtesy of goals by Thomas Muller, Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sane.
But Lewandowski wasn’t to be denied.
With just three minutes remaining he volleyed home a left-footed effort from close range to reach the incredible landmark.
In doing so he also beat yet another Gerd Muller Bundesliga record.
The strike was his 43rd league goal of 2021, beating Muller’s previous best tally of 42.

With Bayern now entering a winter break, this had been Lewandowski’s last opportunity to achieve the feat.
His overall tally of 69 may be level with Ronaldo’s career-best – but it isn’t the outright record.
Lionel Messi‘s astonishing figure of 91 goals scored in 2012 is unlikely to be beaten for a long time.
Muller also managed 85 in all competitions in 1972, while Pele bagged 75 in 1958, and 72 in 1965.
Romario also scored that number in 2000, while fellow Brazilian Zico did it in 1979.
Lewandowski’s feat puts him up there with these legends of the game.
But it wasn’t enough to earn him his first Ballon d’Or, with Messi instead winning the gong for the seventh time of his career.
