Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS5 upgrade available for PS Plus subscribers this week

If you redeemed Final Fantasy 7 Remake through PS Plus earlier in the year, you’ll be able to upgrade to the PS5 version this week.

This month has certainly been kind to Final Fantasy 7 Remake fans. Only a few days ago the game was finally released for PC after over a year of waiting, and now Sony and Square Enix have a special deal happening very soon.

In March of this year, PlayStation Plus subscribers were able to download Final Fantasy 7 Remake at no extra cost. However, it came with the caveat that it couldn’t be upgraded to the fancy new PlayStation 5 version, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, that had just been announced.

That will change as of Wednesday, December 22. PS Plus subscribers who downloaded Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be allowed to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version.

There’s no mention if the upgrade will be free or not, like it is for anyone who buys the original PlayStation 4 version. Although if it did cost extra, Square Enix would likely have mentioned it.

You’ll still need to purchase the Yuffie DLC, Episode Intermission, separately, but that will be sold at a 25% discount for a limited amount of time.

This is certainly a welcome gesture, but the news has already infuriated those who got Final Fantasy 7 Remake for free and paid for the PlayStation 5 version because they didn’t expect such an offer to be made.

i bought it at full price becuase i didnt think i was gonna get an upgrade. please announce these things further ahead.

Fans have also expressed annoyance over the PC version being an Epic Games Store exclusive, much like the Kingdom Hearts games, but it’s looking like it will eventually jump over to Steam as well.

Datamining efforts revealed a Steam AppID buried within the game’s files, which is required to launch a game on Valve’s platform. It will no doubt become available once Square Enix and Epic Games’ exclusivity deal expires, which history suggests won’t be for another year at least.

Despite fan frustration, the modding community has already begun fiddling and messing with the PC version. There are currently 67 mods available on Nexus Mods, ranging from technical improvements to purely cosmetic changes, such as having Tifa and Aerith wear one of their optional dresses throughout the whole game or, for some reason, swapping Cloud’s Buster Sword for villain Scarlet, so he’s swinging her around as a weapon.
