“Played Roger That Summer”: Mardy Fish Reveals His Moment With Mental Health Issues

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer was one of the players who spoke on mental health issues. He felt that there are players from the younger generation whose mental health takes a greater toll as compared to their senior generations due to the rampant misuse of social media by miscreants and media.

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka revealed during the French Open that she was facing such issues. Recently, former American tennis player Mardy Fish revealed his moment of realizing he was dealing with such an issue.

The 40-year-old stated, “I got to Wimbledon, made the fourth round there and I was thinking what are these uncomfortable feelings and that’s where it started. I played Roger that summer. I actually played fairly well and had some great results. A quarterfinal at a masters 1000 event, reached many fourth rounds of Slams and things like that. Tennis was fine. At that time I didn’t know what mental health was and I didn’t know what anxiety was, I didn’t know what panic and depression were honestly.”

Post Roger Federer match, there was a realization 

He played Federer at Wimbledon and it was around that time Fish realized he was dealing with anxiety. Although he had good results at the tournaments making the second week at Grand Slams, he still was dealing with difficulties off the court. 

Coming to tennis, Federer and Fish have competed against each other on nine occasions. The Swiss ace has dominated most of them, winning eight of those matches.

At the moment, Fish is the Davis Cup team captain. Federer on the other hand is on the road to recovery. We wish to see him on the courts compete soon.
