Even Louis Theroux struggles to answer questions about himself as he pops up as Mastermind subject

How well do you know Louis Theroux? As it turns out, probably about as well as the man himself.

The documentary maker challenged himself after being featured on long-running quiz show Mastermind recently, and found it trickier than her ever could have guessed.

The 51-year-old’s TV shows were chosen by contestant Laura Ellerton as she delved into his career for the specialist subject round.

‘If I’m completely honest, I think I’m going to do really well on it,’ Louis said before taking on the challenge in a video posted on Instagram.

‘I am Louis Theroux… so it would be pretty weird if I didn’t have a fairly good grasp of the content.’

Questions from the round included the real name of Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic, as well as obscure details from his Weird Weekends series.

In the end, Louis managed seven correct answers, but found it much more difficult than he expected.

‘Those were hard questions,’ he said after taking on the round. ‘Those were tough.’

‘Can I just salute [contestant] Laura, I thought she did amazingly well… Given that I have the advantage of having lived those documentaries, I was distressingly poor.’

He also said that he was sending a gift to Laura for her efforts on the programme, which saw her manage six points.

The caption for the video read: ‘My documentaries were a subject on a resent episode of Mastermind [sic]. I couldn’t resist having a go.

‘Huge respect to the real life contestant Laura Ellerton for her amazing knowledge – and a free copy of #TherouxTheKeyhole is on its way!’

Meanwhile, it comes after Louis treated us all to a thirst-trap after posting a cheeky topless photo, glowing after a workout.

In fairness to Louis, it was all about promoting the importance of mental and physical health via one of his pal Joe Wicks’ popular online workouts.

He recently revealed he had struck up a ‘Covid bromance’ with popular fitness influencer Joe as they worked together on the documentary Joe Wicks: Mental Health, My Family And Me.

MasterMind is available to stream on BBC iPlayer
