After so many twists and turns, it’s only fitting that CM Punk and Sting teamed up on AEW Dynamite before the end of 2021.

All Elite Wrestling has provided plenty of surprises and epic moments over the past 12 months, and last night’s show rewarded fans again as the former WWE Champion – who came out of retirement in September after a seven-year hiatus – stood alongside the Icon.

Punk came out for the match – which saw them team up with Darby Allin to take on FTR duo Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood and their partner MJF – in colourful face paint reminiscent of Sting’s early WCW career.

It was a wonderful moment, with the living legend offering a tribute of his own as he switched up his usual paint and went with a design honouring Punk himself.

Sting’s design featured the veteran’s taped fists logo as they stepped out with Allin for the main event on Wednesday night for the special Holiday Bash episode of Dynamite.

It was a barnstormer of a match with all six men delivering something special here, and a special mention has to do to Wheeler and Harwood for their quick thinking when things nearly took a disastrous turn.

MJF took a nasty fall to the outside and landed on his head, and they immediately checked on him in a subtle way to determine whether or not the match could continue.

Thankfully, it was safe to do so, and the bout ended after Dax was hit with both the Go 2 Sleep and Scorpion Death Drop to give the babyface trio the win.

It was a feelgood end to a great festive show which opened with a huge surprise as former WWE NXT star Kyle O’Reilly made his debut to reunite with his Undisputed Era teammates Adam Cole and Bobby Fish.

There had been plenty of speculation about his future plans, but now it’s confirmed that he’s signed a deal with AEW.

He tweeted after the show: ‘Life is crazy and I’m very grateful that my professional wrestling abilities have taken me to a new frontier in which to explore my ass-kicking ways. Proud to be apart of @AEW and thanks to @TonyKhan for the opportunity.

‘If you’re a fan of mine from elsewhere I hope you continue to support me. If you’re new to KOR prepare to see a man that pours his f’n soul into that ring every night and has an unquenchable thirst for cans of whoop ass.’

*AEW Dynamite airs Wednesday nights at 1am on Fite TV.
