Dame Joan Collins on new documentary exploring ‘seven decades of showbiz’: ‘People can draw their own conclusions’

Dame Joan Collins is reliving the ups and downs of her stellar career in an upcoming documentary.

The 88-year-old actress and author has narrated her new feature-length documentary, This Is Joan Collins, which will explore her rise to fame, and will air on BBC Two on New Year’s Day.

Despite an incredible career in the industry, the star revealed she’s had a fair share of ‘vicious’ and ‘nasty’ things said about her by critics.

However, she wants the one-off special to focus more on the positives.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, she said: ‘I just didn’t think there was any point, you know; people can draw their own conclusions. You know, if they don’t like it, or they don’t like me, that’s fine. You can switch off.

‘But I didn’t necessarily want horrible, bitchy remarks.’

This Is Joan Collins will also feature home archive footage, which sees the former soap veteran speaking about her illustrious career in the spotlight.

Joan, who was made a Dame in 2015 for her services to charity, recently branded cancel culture phenomenon as ‘tragic,’ after being asked if her outspoken attitude made her ‘worry’ she would be cancelled.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, she said: ‘Why should everyone think the same thing about everything?

‘It’s very boring, really.’

From 1981 to 1991, Joan played Alexis Carrington Colby in the American soap opera Dynasty and won critical acclaim for her portrayal as one of television’s most iconic villains.

The notable role brought also earned her a Golden Globe Award for best actress in 1982 and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 1984.

The award-winning author also revealed how she successfully negotiated a pay rise to match her male peers but lost time on screen after securing equal pay.

She said: ‘I finally got what I really believed I deserved and they cut me down to only half the episodes.’

This Is Joan Collins airs at 9pm on January 1 on BBC2.
