Kate Garraway has opened up about her health fears for husband husband Derek Draper during ‘bumpy’ Christmas celebrations.

The Good Morning Britain star’s husband, 54, returned home from hospital in April of this year after spending more than 12 months battling for his life.

Taking to Instagram, the presenter explained that he had a ‘scare’ during their festivities, which may have meant his return to treatment.

Alongside a sweet snap of her partner and their two children, Billy and Darcey, she penned: ‘So the last 24 hours has been bumpy – a scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital (thankfully sorted by a visit from nurse/carer), he has also had one of his ultra fatigue days so has been too weak to do much other than sleep.

‘I burnt the parsnips (Darceys favourite) & got the “wrong” Lego for Billy.

‘But now snuggled up around Dad’s bed watching #nativity everything feels suddenly perfect Feel so grateful to have the chance to be together.’

Kate concluded the post by adding: ‘Sending love & hoping you have found some joy today whatever your circumstances – #merrychristmas all!’

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star was instantly flooded with support from friends and fans over her upload.

GMB co-star Ranvir Singh replied: ‘I hope you sat down immediately after taking this photo and let those wings rest. You are their guardian Angel … and you have superhuman powers of endurance.

‘But even superheroes need to take breath my love. God bless them and you x x x.’

Alex Beresford commented: ‘Without you this beautiful moment couldn’t happen. And what is it about parsnips – I’m with Darcy.’

‘Such a beautiful Christmas picture, full of love, surrounded by those we love,’ a follower said. ‘They won’t remember the Lego and parsnips, but will remember just “being” xx.’

As one posted: ‘See absolutely perfect. Sending you the most love we so lucky just being in the moment whatever that is is right now.’

Derek was initially diagnosed with Covid at the end of March, 2020, and was taken into intensive care soon after.

He was later found to be free of coronavirus, but it had wreaked havoc with the rest of his body, sparking a series of health issues.

The former lobbyist was released from hospital this year but is receiving full-time care at home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Kate previously lifted the lid on their Christmas plans on GMB, telling viewers: ‘Last Christmas Eve, we did have a lot of promise and a lot of hope. But Derek was in hospital. We had no idea whether he was going to live or die, praying that it was going in the right direction.’

‘And this year, of course, he’s home so we are spending Christmas together, and that is the biggest gift.

‘It’s kind of hard to get your head around really. But we have still got fears. Still got a long, long way to go. And still hugely grateful for everyone that kept him alive and saved his life thus far.’
