People are only just discovering why winter bobble hats have pom-poms on them & it’s blowing their minds

MANY people love a bobble hat, but you may be interested to learn that the pom-pom wasn’t always for decorative purposes.

Bobbles on clothing can actually be dated all the way back to the Viking era – and they’ve held a number of functions over the years.

Pom-poms on bobble hats weren’t always just for decoration

Their early roots were discovered on a statue which was found on a farm in Sweden in 1904.

It depicted the Viking god Freyr, whose hat or helmet featured a pom-pom on top.

In a number of European countries, wearing a pom-pom on your hat indicated what rank you held in society.

If you were a clergyman in Rome, you would wear a cap called a birettas that had different colour pom-poms based on what job you had.

Meanwhile, over in Scotland they were used by military forces such as Scottish Highland regiments and Napoleon’s infantry.

The Outline said that some experts believed that bobbles helped to provide soldiers with a defence against the elements and identified which regiment troops belonged to.

Sailors at sea used to also wear pom-pom hats so they didn’t bang their heads when they were stooping in low parts of ships.

They were also a popular fashion statement during the Depression as they were an inexpensive way to add some style to a basic outfit.

So there we have it, bobble hats have stood the test of time and have been much more than just a sweet fashion piece.
