Williams F1 Hints at Potentially Terminating Partnership With Mercedes Amidst Audi Interests
Since the beginning of the year 2021, Formula 1 has been receiving a lot of interest from other racing outfits and automotive brands, including Andretti Autosport and Volkswagen Group, thanks to the game-changing regulatory changes which are due in 2026.
But, let’s keep the focus on the German automotive company for now. Volkswagen have desperately been hunting for ways to sneak one of their sub-brands, Audi or Porsche, into F1. And, like any other potential newcomers, they initially looked to buy their way into an existing team.
And rightfully so, a rumor bloomed out of McLaren a few months back which claimed the British outfit to be in the middle of talks over selling their F1 team to Audi by 2022. But, the talks never came to fruition, as Volkswagen found itself ending back up at square one.

However, interestingly, a new rumor has been cooking up in the paddock featuring Williams Racing. Only this time, it isn’t about Audi or Porsche taking over the team’s functioning but rather about Williams potentially terminating their contract with Mercedes by 2026 and subsequently tying up with Audi.

Are Williams set to their partnership with Mercedes?
The answer is no, at least for the time being. Williams F1 boss, Jost Capito, acknowledged that the Dorilton Capitals-owned outfit will not be losing their grip on the engines manufactured by the defending champions of Formula 1 anytime before 2026.
Speaking to Motorsport-Total, Capito said that the entire team is “satisfied with the Mercedes partnership.”
However, the German also pointed out that Williams are open to having talks with the Volkswagen Group in the coming years. It is “attractive for every team to get a factory engine. If there are opportunities for discussions, the discussions will of course be conducted,” he added.

It is likely that the Williams-Mercedes partnership will remain active until the end of 2025. But, with a massive engine regulatory change scheduled for 2026 and potential new engine manufacturers joining the grid, most of the F1 teams will look to explore their options.
Hence, the 2026 F1 season will witness a significant mix-up within the teams and their engine suppliers. But, will Williams be one of them? Only time will tell.
