Moment ‘arsonists’ pose for selfies before ‘setting fire to Christmas tree’ at Key West’s Southernmost Point landmark

THE hunt is on for two arsonists who took selfies before setting fire to a Christmas tree in front of the Key West’s Southernmost Point buoy Saturday morning.

A webcam near the buoy captured arsonists moments before the crime, where the two men took photos of one another with the tree.

Other images show the men taking in their surroundings and sitting by the water’s edge.

Then, just a few minutes after the selfies were taken, the men set the tree ablaze, running off as it went up in flames. 

Local firefighters arrived at the scene in minutes, putting out the fire without incident. In the morning, images from the webcam show tourists seeing the charred buoy.

However, after the initial shock, tourists went back to taking selfies with the landmark.

The buoy sits 90 miles off the coast of Cuba and has been a popular US destination since 1983 when it was established. 

It is a red, yellow, black and white marker resembling a giant marine navigational buoy.

After suffering damage from Hurricane Irma, the buoy was restored in 2017.

The site is the southernmost point of Key West’s street grid, however, there are parts of Florida that are further south.

The actual southernmost point of the US is in Hawaii.
