The pair then exchanged sets to make it 5-5 with three sets remaining – Smith missed the chance to make it 6-4 by blowing a two-leg lead in the tenth.

And he paid the price as Wright won three sets in a row to become world champion for the second time

The pair showed early nerves with 28 darts needed to settle the second leg of the match in Smith’s favour.

But Smith soon found his grove and began founding trebles with ease, breaking the all-time record for most 180s in a World Championship.
