I spend my life shouting at my husband because he won’t wear his hearing aids

DEAR DEIDRE: BECAUSE he doesn’t feel like a “real man” with his hearing aids in, my husband refuses to wear them. But the constant need to repeat myself is driving me insane.

He partially lost his hearing a few years ago after a bad car accident.

Now I spend my life shouting at him

It has been hard for him, going from being a really able, active man to relearning the basics.

He is 56, I’m 53 and we’ve been married for 28 years.

At Christmas I bought him some “invisible” hearing aids. I figured he would feel happier if he thought people couldn’t see them so much. But he refuses to wear them.

It’s frustrating because they were expensive and now I spend my life shouting at him.

What can I do to make him feel better about wearing them?

DEIDRE SAYS: It sounds like your husband is putting his pride before his comfort.

Tell him you understand it must be frustrating for him to miss what is going on – and it is frustrating for you to constantly have to repeat yourself.

Suggest he tries wearing his hearing aids when it’s just you two at home.

He will then be able to hear – and will hopefully become more comfortable with the idea of wearing them outside the house.
