Houston Texans Set a ‘Target’ to Trade Deshaun Watson Ahead of Free Agency

The Houston Texans have finally decided to let go of the controversial quarterback in their 53-man active roster, Deshaun Watson. According to NFL Insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Texans have set a “target” to trade the quarterback before the 2022 free agency opens up on March 16.

Watson has remained the subject of the matter earlier this season due to his allegations. Following that, the three-time Pro Bowler requested a trade by the franchise over the changes made in the front office and the coaching staff. The Texans, though, came close to a highly profitable deal with the Dolphins, did not let the QB go.

Surprisingly, he continued to take part in the training camp despite his off-field controversies. Since Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio believed that he would deal with Watson’s situation on his own terms. Furthermore, he was also named in the 53-man active roster of the Texans alongside Tyrod Taylor and rookie Davis Mills as other QBs.

Houston Texans prepare to trade Deshaun Watson

Watson has been a healthy scratch for the entirety of the season. While, on the other hand, all the quarterback duties were shared by Davis Mills and Tyrod Taylor. However, Mills saw more action than Taylor. In his 10 starts, he threw for 2,363 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

The #Texans will evaluate their entire football operation — including the future of coach David Culley — this week as they embark on a critical offseason that could yield a Deshaun Watson trade before free agency opens in March.

Watson had been on a paid suspension during which he has received all of his $10.5 million base salary for 2021. But as he heads towards a new season, it’s unlikely that the status quo would remain unchanged. It is believed that the quarterback will suit up for the Texans or play for another team that he will be traded to.

And although the Texans have not made the playoffs with one of the most miserable campaigns. They still haven’t taken the help of Watson. And with the season coming to an end, the Texans have already started to prepare for their 2022 season.
