The Degrassi franchise is being rebooted by HBO Max with a new season on the way for 2023.

The network confirmed 10 hour-long episodes that will be a ‘reprise of the original teen drama’ and will focus on a new group of teenagers ‘living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart.’

Set at the fictional Degrassi Community School, the show travels deep into the hearts and homes of diverse, complicated characters, as they struggle to find their new normal, reaching for hope, redemption, and love.

The upcoming chapter will be helmed by The Bold Type showrunner Lara Azzopardi and Riverdale’s Julia Cohen.

Filming will take place in Toronto during the summer.

Degrassi already has 14 seasons under its belt and first launched in 2001, with the latest chapter aired in 2015.

Each series sees students face various issues and challenges such as sex, teen pregnancy, bullying, date rape, drug abuse, body image, homosexuality, mental illness, gang violence, and much more.

Various characters from the previous two series also return as adults in recurring or guest roles.

In its initial years, it was frequently the most-watched domestic drama series in Canada.

Oh crap. A NEW #DEGRASSI SERIES IS ON THE WAY AT HBO MAX.

I’m nervous about the changes — hour-long instead of half, change in some execs, the stylization of the dramatics, whether there will be any returning cast or not. But I’m excited because Long Live Degrassi! pic.twitter.com/sbJBYTMQtS

‘Series after series, the Degrassi franchise continues to make an indelible impact on young viewers looking for trustworthy and authentic storytelling,’ said Warner Bros’ Head of Kids & Family Programming, Amy Friedman.

Fans are over the moon that Degrassi will soon be back on television screens.

‘Thinking about all the hours we spent hoping for, wondering about, and campaigning for Degrassi to come back,’ one wrote. ‘So many of us never gave up hope.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘I’m honestly emotional. Degrassi is back baby!

Some also suggested the idea of a Euphoria crossover. Euphoria, of course, is a huge HBO series that also follows a group of high school students who struggle with drugs, love, social media, and money.

‘The Euphoria x Degrassi crossover episode is going to be one for the BOOKS!!!’ one enthused.

More: Euphoria

Another predicted: ‘The Degrassi and Euphoria crossover bout to be bigger than anything Marvel could ever put together.’

We’re holding out hope…

Degrassi will return in 2023 on HBO Max.
