‘Don’t Start Manipulating Tour Events’: PGA Tour Players and Golf Fans React to the New Netflix Announcement

Thrilling news has taken over the golf community, as the PGA Tour finally gave the green light for Netflix to go ahead and film a documentary series on them. On Wednesday, the streaming service company confirmed the news and also disclosed the names of the professional golfers that it will feature.

From Vox Media Studios and the producers of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, they are looking to replicate its success in golf. Filming and interviews already began in December, at the Hero World Challenge, while all the attention was on Tiger Woods’ first public appearance.

The long list of golfers who Netflix has managed to rope in for the documentary consists of 5 of the top 7 ranked golfers! Some of them are- Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger, Cameron Champ, Tony Finau, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Kevin Na, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Bubba Watson.

PGA Tour golfers and fans share their excitement

Even though the filming has only just begun and the result will not be available for us to watch until very long, this has not deterred the fans one bit. No, the exuberant fans are storming over social media, expressing their joy. Nevertheless, unsurprisingly, there are a couple doubting the entire process and whether this will actually show them a true inside picture.

Many golfers themselves have expressed their excitement. 34-year-old Joel Dahmen, in an interview prior to the Sony Open in Hawaii, admitted, “Excited would be the wrong word. I am apprehensive about the entire thing. I’ve never had anything like this before; unlike some of these other guys, I’m not used to having cameras around all the time.” Max Homa had an honest and adorable reaction-

I can’t believe imma be on Netflix lol

What did you do with all the time you saved typing “imma” and not “I’m going to”?

Moreover, Kevin Na also couldn’t believe the events taking place. He said-

who’s excited about the Netflix series on golf? So cool that I get to be in it!

This series has caused a huge mess in Formula 1, the last championship was a big fail because priority for content for entertainment was taken over the actual sport, do not mess up golf!

Now @netflix, let’s do one with the @LPGA https://t.co/lU0Vc5Nyh5

Let’s hope they don’t start manipulating tour events to make good episodes like they did with F1.

11 US, 4 Eur, 1 Mex. No Aussies, no South Africans, no Japanese, no Indians, no Koreans, etc. PGA brags that it has 90 players from 28 countries outside the US. Would have thought there’d be unique perspectives from different cultures and long distances from home.

Super smart by the @PGATOUR here!

Surprised you let down the @DPWorldTour and joined this. Shame

Yay. Are people still thinking golf will become like formula 1? Just turn on the golf most weeks when half the players on this list are either not playing, out of contention or missed the cut. And that watching golf tournaments is absolutely boring af.

Hell yes.

Moreover, Rick Anderson, chief media officer of the PGA Tour, delved into some details and said, “This partnership with Netflix presents the PGA Tour and the four major championships an opportunity to tap into a completely new and diverse audience. This documentary will give fans an authentic look into the real lives of our athletes, and what it’s like to win—and lose—during a season on the PGA Tour.”
