Houston Texans Part Ways with Head Coach David Culley After Just His Solitary Season

The Houston Texans organization did part ways with Head Coach David Culley after only a single season under his tenure. The decision from the franchise was courtesy of a report from the NFL Network. Culley’s sacking comes following a 4-13 season in which they did finish 3rd in the AFC South and growing rifts with GM Nick Caserio.

The franchise did release a statement with GM Caserio that did thank Culley for his services and did address their issues. Culley was the franchise’s fourth head coach hire in their history, with the search for his successor underway. GM Caserio did address the issues stating, “While a change after one season is unusual, we had philosophical differences over the long-term direction and vision for our program moving forward.

David Culley: an inexperienced candidate who over delivered

The 66-year-old who is on his way out did arguably a great job with a squad in absolute turmoil. He took reign of the Texans ship when they were in rocky waters. He also during his entire tenure was without his star QB Deshaun Watson, who was looking to move to new pastures. Watson also was fighting a legal battle following sexual allegations leveled against him.

David Culley before his job with the Texans never held any major posts during his 45 years of coaching experience. Many fans including Texans fans did view the franchise as the NFL’s weakest roster. Before the 2021 season commenced, they were the overwhelming favorites to win the No.1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Despite being in a poor situation, Culley really did spring some surprise results but not enough to make major strides. But now the Texans will be in search of prospective candidates with free-agent coach Brian Flores, a leading favorite. QB Watson was rumored to be really showing great interest in moving to Miami before Flores was released.

Now the opportunity seems to be presenting itself to GM Caserio and the Texans to make the most following Culley’s dismissal.
