Los Angeles Rams Signs Eric Weddle Out of Retirement: ‘Clearly Their Last and Best Option’

NFL franchise Los Angeles Rams completed the free-agent signing of retired Safety Eric Weddle for the entire duration of the Playoffs. He joins the team following a season-ending ankle injury to Jordan Fuller, who was subsequently put on injured reserve. The announcement on Wednesday did release courtesy of his agent David Canter.

The organization also swiftly did declare that he was an addition to their practice squad. In a season where injury has been less of a menace for the Rams, they find themselves now down a few men. Notably, they are also dealing with two other key injuries within their secondary. Safety Taylor Rapp did enter the concussion protocol after the 49ers game, while CB Darious Williams also left the game with a shoulder injury.

The rumors of his return were rife following a series of tweets by Rams CB Jalen Ramsey. NFL fans have been receiving exclusive news from him on social media. The player has been in the past a source of news or hints about exciting things happening within the Rams camp. While speaking on NFL Now, reporter Ian Rapoport states, “This was their last and best option considering they have two significant injuries in the position. They literally have to play this week.”

Eric Weddle to save the Rams?

The Safety player has been out of the game since the 2019 season with the Rams. The 37-year-old player really did enjoy a 13-year career before his retirement. Weddle has been a big defensive presence, recording 29 interceptions, including four returned for touchdowns. He also has 8 forced fumbles, 7 fumble recoveries, 9.5 sacks, and 98 pass deflections.

He also is a six-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro honored NFL veteran. His performances throughout his career also earned him a place in the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. The Rams fans will be hoping he has an impactful spell this time around as well.

The Rams do find themselves in a great position following a special season under QB Matthew Stafford. Along with him and his offensive weapons like Odell Beckham Jr., the Rams find themselves in with a chance to go deep into the playoffs. The defensive reinforcements like Weddle will go a long way to teams coming at them sensing weakness.

Rightly nicknamed ‘E Dub’ by CB Ramsey, the Rams will be hoping to rack in Ws when they matter the most.
