Serena Williams Experiences Big Blow in Rankings Following Australian Open 2022 Withdrawal

American tennis star Serena Williams has had a rough period over the past 12 months. The 2021 season did not go as per her wishes as she underperformed in the Grand Slam events.

Williams’ best performance in the Grand Slam events was at the Australian Open 2021 when she came as far as the semifinal before losing to eventual champion Naomi Osaka. She crashed out of the fourth round at the French Open, and she was not matching up to her usual standards.

Due to these unfortunate results and for missing the Australian Open 2022, she will be dropping places in the WTA Rankings and coming outside of the top 50, which is a huge downturn for Serena Williams. She has been a player more often associated with the top-ranked players.

Over the past two decades, Williams has been ranked outside the top 20 Rankings occasionally. In fact, during her pregnancy, she was ranked as low as 453. At the moment, she is World No. 41 but she will not be able to defend the points earned during last season’s Australian Open. Therefore, she will be outside the Top 50.

Reflecting on the last season, Serena suffered an unfortunate outcome at the Wimbledon Championships. She twisted her ankle and, due to that, had to withdraw from the opening round match during the initial stages.

As a result, she failed to win any points with significance. Williams skipped the US Open as she suffered from a hamstring injury. Due to these miserable results at the Grand Slam tournaments, the 23-time Grand Slam winner will pay the price as far as her ranking is concerned.

Nonetheless, at this stage in her career, the Rankings won’t be of much concern for the veteran. However, it could land her with tougher draws in future tournaments. Williams has had rough phases in her career but has found a way to bounce back.

One won’t be surprised if she manages to return to the top of the rankings. It will be interesting to see if she wins the 24th Grand Slam title in the 2022 season.
