Superman game rumours take off again following WB Games Montréal job listing

Can we just have a proper nice Superman for once? Not a grimdark evil one? (pic: WB Games)

Gotham Knights dev WB Games Montréal is most definitely working on a second project, reviving rumours of a Superman game.

Warner Bros. Games Montréal, the studio behind the upcoming Gotham Knights, is looking for a senior gameplay AI programmer for an unannounced AAA game, and internet thinks it might be a Superman game.

While nothing else gives away what sort of game it could be, it’s safe to assume that it will be one based on a DC property, since the job listing, which was spotted by one Faizan Shaikh, says the studio is ‘focused on developing games that expand the DC universe in the interactive space.’

Despite no formal announcement, WB Games Montréal gave its secret project away last year through, you guessed it, more job listings. At the time, the big rumour was that it’s a Superman game and this newer listing has brought that rumour back into the spotlight.

Between Batman’s illustrious video game career and the recently announced Wonder Woman game from Monolith Productions (the studio behind Shadow Of Mordor and its sequel), the Man of Steel is the only member of DC’s Trinity to lack a pedigree video game.

Superman is no stranger to them, but he’s had to mostly make do with playable appearances in the Injustice fighting games, the Lego titles, and the obligatory Fortnite cameo. There’s also Rocksteady’s upcoming Suicide Squad game, but there he looks set to be an antagonist.

Games to have featured him in the starring role have normally not been very good and there hasn’t been a dedicated Superman game since the Superman Returns tie-in from 2006.

There have been reports of multiple other attempts to get such a project off the ground. Rocksteady, for example, supposedly pitched one as its next game following Batman: Arkham Knight, but it was rejected for unknown reasons.

Whatever this new game is, don’t expect to hear anything official from WB Games Montréal until after Gotham Knights releases. which will hopefully be sometime later this year.

Unlike previous Batman games, Gotham Knights doesn’t actually star the Caped Crusader, with players instead taking control of Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, and Red Hood, as they take on various supervillains, including the mysterious Court of Owls.
