Sinéad O’Connor has paid tribute to her ‘angel’ son Shane following his death at the age of 17.

The musician, 55, lost her son, who she shares with fellow Irish musician Donal Lunny.

Shane took his own life days after he was reported missing from a hospital in Dublin, with Sinéad previously saying she feels ‘lost’ without her son.

On January 8, Sinéad – who changed her name to Shuhada’ Davitt in 2018 – announced Shane’s death on Twitter, writing: ‘My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.

‘May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.’

Now the family have said goodbye to the teenager with a special Hindu ceremony, the religion Shane practiced.

Taking to social media, Sinéad wrote: ‘We just said goodbye to our beautiful angel, Shaney. Very lovely Hindu ceremony.

‘Shane will have loved it,’ she said, adding: ‘He was always chanting “Om. Shanti”.’

The grieving mum wrote that she ‘put a few packs of fags in the coffin for him in case there’s none in heaven. He’ll have loved that too.’

Sinéad finished her tribute with the words ‘Om. Shanti’, in memory of her son.

On January 8, Gardaí confirmed that the search for Shane had been stood down following the discovery of a body in Bray, County Wicklow.

A memorial service for Shane, following the Hindu ceremony, will be held on Sunday in County Wicklow.

The O’Connor-Lunny family have asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to suicide prevention charity Pieta House in memory of the teenager.

In a tweet last week, Sinéad acknowledged Donal’s efforts in supporting their son, writing: ‘You did your best too, Donal. And Shane adored you.

‘And I will always remember how sweet you have been to him. You have been a lovely father. I am so sorry for your loss.’

Shane was Sinéad’s only child with Donal but she is also mother to three other children; son Jake, 34, daughter Roisin, 25, and son Yeshua.
