Canelo Alvarez Gets Called Out by Joe Smith Jr.: ‘That’s the Fight I Want’

P4P king Canelo Alvarez is currently grabbing call-outs from various directions and weight classes. Following his dominant stint at 168 lbs, the undisputed super-middleweight champion can now move up to 175 lbs or even 200 lbs in his coming appearances.

WBO light heavyweight champion Joe Smith Jr. is willing to offer himself in-ring if Alvarez comes back to the light heavyweight ecosystem. He defended his title against Steve Geffrard via a round 9 KO in a fight he took at short notice.

Having earned a sensational win, Smith Jr. can potentially expect a unification fight against Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol in the future. However, Smith Jr. is interested in sharing the ring with Saul.

After his win, Joe Smith Jr. said, “If Canelo wants to come to 175 [pounds] and fight me, I am ready for it. That’s the fight I want.”

Alvarez had held the WBO light heavyweight title in 2019 after he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in a stacked MGM Grand Arena. Now that he has achieved glory at 168, the idea of him coming back to reclaim a belt he never lost is intriguing and could be worth considering.

Canelo Alvarez is on everybody’s wish list

Prior to Joe Smith Jr’s callout to Canelo Alvarez, several world champions had desired to meet the P4P King in an in-ring affair. WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade caused drama when he got into an altercation with Alvarez in the post-fight presser of the latter’s scrap against Billy Joe Saunders.

Meanwhile, WBC also approved the idea of Alvarez moving up to cruiserweight to challenge Ilunga Makabu for the cruiserweight title.

Amid all of it, Jermall Charlo is also in talks to have a shot at Canelo Alvarez next. Thus, Alvarez, who has a lot of options before him, can comfortably craft his plan of returning to the ring.
