“Lucky to Even Still Be Here” – Formula 1 Hopeful Narrates the Financial Toll Surrounding the Rich Man’s Sport

The road to Formula 1 is often a rocky one. In what is widely considered a rich man’s sport, money plays a central role. Therefore, in the battle to the top, there are a few lucky ones who make it. Logan Sargeant considers himself to be one of those as the Williams protégé who will now take his first steps in F2.

The American driver has signed with Carlin for his debut F2 season. However, it didn’t come easy to him. He had explained how 2021 brought with it uncertainty surrounding budget problems, making a move to F2 much more difficult.

Although he couldn’t return with Prema in 2021, Charouz Racing System approached the driver. Now, he will race in F2 with Carlin while simultaneously fulfilling his role in the Williams Driver Programme.

Looking back at his year, Sargeant said, “I think the way the whole 12 months has gone has really changed me as a person and a driver. I realize that I’m lucky to even still be here doing what I love. As you know, that looked like it was quickly fading.”

The driver added, “It’s drastically changed my mindset, whereas now I can just really enjoy it, I can really just give it give it everything I have. And anything I get from here is just a bonus.” Yet, his eyes are set on a hopeful F1 seat.

Logan Sargeant eyes potential Formula 1 drive

Sargeant has been something of an all-rounder. The now F2 driver spend 2021 with a win and three podiums in the F3 series, while also making appearances in the European Le Mans Series and the Le Mans Cup appearances.

He reflects on these races as his saving graces amid his financial troubles. “I didn’t have the budget to move up to Formula 2, I didn’t have the budget to go back to F3 and go for the title. We really just took what came in our direction, and that was really the saving grace of the year, to be honest. So I’m really grateful for that opportunity.”

Now, the driver is a step closer to facing the big league. His years in the feeder series will be crucial as the goal would be to have the F1 paddock buzzing with his name. Will Sargeant find himself in the F1 pool in the coming years? Only time will tell.
