I started working in fashion as a Saturday job… now I’m 27 and own a £2.1 million clothing empire

SHE started working in fashion as a Saturday job before finding fame as a fashion blogger.

And after quitting her retail job back in 2014, Sarah Ashcroft went on to found loungewear brand SLA The Label – with the company recording a turnover of £2.1 million last year.

She counts Craig David among her celebrity customers, and is now hoping to expand SLA The Label even further – by taking it global.

Sarah’s certainly come a long way from when she started the company in 2019, investing £50,000 she made from her work as a fashion influencer.

“I started SLA The Label back in June 2019 from my parent’s front room when I was 25,” she told The Mirror.

“Having a fashion brand has always been a dream of mine and after being a fashion influencer for almost six years, I felt like I had learnt a lot about what consumers (my followers) wanted to wear.”

Since starting SLA The Label, Sarah has launched a swimwear line, a wider casual streetwear collection and the Angel Number collection – two hoodies and matching joggers which formed the company’s most successful launch to date.

But that’s not to say that the entrepreneur hasn’t made her fair share of mistakes since starting the business – as she admits it’s still a learning curve for her.


“Being self-funded in the early stages meant that as much as I knew we could sell 2,000 joggers, I couldn’t afford to buy that much stock so it was a real circle for a while of constantly selling out which made the user experience not great,” she sighed.

“Warehouse space has also been an issue for us as we have outgrown three warehouses in almost three years due to not being able to predict the growth of the brand.”

Now she’s got a team of five, including three freelance designers, and 2022 is already looking similarly successful for SLA The Label.

“We have already seen our highest sales in a January since launching, currently at £230,000 in 2022 to date so it’s a positive start to the year,” she smiled.

And the world is Sarah’s oyster, as she concluded: “I am extremely excited for the future of SLA.

“I still have so much to learn in the business world and often feel like I am just winging it so I feel proud to have reached where we are today.”
