You’re using your TV WRONG – everyone should change these settings today

FANCY TVs go big on sound but you’re not alone if you feel like you’re struggling to hear what’s being said.

With all the sound effects to liven things up, spoken words can often get lost in the mist.

Muffled dialogue has been a complaint about several shows over the years, including Happy Valley and BBC’s 2014 3-part drama Jamaica Inn.

Thankfully there are ways you can improve audio quality yourself from the comfort of your sofa.

So why not dabble with these settings and see if it makes conversations in your favourite TV shows and movies a bit clearer?

Change TV sound settings

Your TV has a wealth of settings, including ones for sound and audio.

As each TV is different, getting to it varies, so you might have a button that says Audio or AV on your remote.

Alternatively, hit the Menu button and find something like Settings or Sound.

First up, you may have various modes on display – it’s well worth changing these according to what you’re watching.

Example of sound modes on a TV

For example, it might say music, movie, sports or news.

You can try setting the corresponding category to what you’re watching but given that news is very voice-focused this one is a good go-to for anything where you’re struggling to hear voices.

Next up, if you see any slider options, you want to look out for bass.

If the bass is too high, it’s going to create a lot of extra boom sounds, which can really muffle voices for sure.

So consider tweaking this down a bit.

How to adjust the soundbar

Soundbars definitely deliver superior sound overall, so you might want to consider getting one if you don’t already.

This is because our flat TVs these days don’t always handle sound that well, cos they’ve been compacted so much.

That said, voice issues can still exist even for soundbars, so look to tone down any bass.

The subwoofer is another big blaster when it comes to sound – great for those huge war scene explosions, bad for dialogue.

Depending on the subwoofer you have, this might be possible on the remote or may be done on the back of the subwoofer – either way, turn it down and see.

Positioning your stereo speakers

If you have an AV or stereo speaker system, positioning is everything.

Move them away from walls and corners to get better quality sound overall.

Similarly, if you’re simply using your TV set alone for sound, position is also important.

If it’s pushed right against the wall, it’s not going to allow the sound to flow around the room very well.
