Daniil Medvedev Comes Back From 2 Sets Down and Saves a Match Point Against Felix Auger Aliassime at Australian Open 2022 Quarterfinals

It was the final match of the men’s quarterfinal round and we had Daniil Medvedev take on Felix Auger Aliassime. It lived up to its expectation and fans witnessed some of the best tennis played in the tournament so far. After an epic battle, it was Daniil who won the match 6-7(4), 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5, 6-4. 

As the match, began, Auger Aliassime was off to a flying start. He ended up winning the opening set, 7-6 (4). The level of tennis was at the highest and to get the better of Medvedev, one has to be on top of their game. It took slightly over an hour to win the set.

Felix Auger Aliassime draws first blood

In the following set, the Canadian star was clearly riding on the momentum. He broke the Russian powerhouse in the opening game of the second set. At this point, everything was going Felix’s way. 

Both players were striking the ball really well and in a few instances indulged in rallies of 20 shots and more. However, after 41 minutes into the set, it was Auger Aliassime who clinched the set 6-3.

It was now or never for Daniil as he was just one set way from exiting the Australian Open and ending his chances of being the World No. 1 player. If he reached the semifinal, he would be the new World No. 1 player on Monday.

Daniil Medvedev displays composure 

In the third set, things went similar to the opening set. The winner had to be decided by playing out a tiebreaker. As the tiebreaker began, it was Medvedev all over it, winning 7-2 with ease. 

With that, the match went into the fourth set. Both players were playing with real intent. At 4-5 in the fourth set, Medvedev saved a match point and won the game to make it 5-5. In the next game, Daniil got the break and served it out to claim the fourth set 7-5.

The winner of the match had to be now decided in the fifth and final set. As the match went on, Daniil looked stronger and got the break in the seventh game. After close to 5 hours, it was Medvedev who sealed the set 6-4. This was the first comeback by a player from being two sets down to eventually win the match at this year’s Australian Open 2022

Next up for Medvedev, he will face Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinal on Friday. We wish both players the best of luck.
