Dominic Thiem’s Injury Woes Continue With Another Bombshell Announcement

Dominic Thiem had a rough 2021 ATP season. The Austrian had a wrist injury during the grass court tournament in Mallorca and couldn’t play the remainder of the season owing to recovery after a surgery was performed late last year.

Just when things looked good for the Austrian to stage a strong comeback in this year’s ATP tour, he seemed to have hit yet another road block. Thiem, who is supposed to make his comeback on clay in the ATP 250 event in Cordoba, suffered a pain in between the knuckles of his right hand during practice.

As a result, Thiem decided to withdraw from the event. An official message from Thiem was shared from the Cordoba Open’s social media account.

Big hello to everybody. Very sorry but I have to announce that I am going to pull out of ATP in Cordoba in the last days. Suffered a minor injury between my knuckles, little strain of my ligaments. Positive thing there is it is perfectly fine. But, I am suffering pain in my hand. Also, lacking of practice. So, I have to pull out. I am very sad. I am going to come back once I’m 100% fit. And, thank you so much for great and warm welcome here in Cordoba.”

From the words of Thiem, it appears clear that he is still positive of playing tournaments in the future and needs slight rest to get himself back to the playing rhythm. The 2020 US Open champion had a similar issue towards the tail end of 2021 as well.

Thiem is yet to take a decision on his continuation in South American swing

Dominic signed up to play the exhibition event in Abu Dhabi to kick-start his 2022 campaign. Few days before the Mubadala event, Thiem announced his decision to not play the tournament and eventually decided to skip the Australian Open as well.

Tournaments on clay seemed to be a perfect way for Thiem to stage his comeback keeping in mind the French Open in May. After the setback in Cordoba, it remains to be seen if the Austrian continues his journey in the South American swing or goes back home and decides to play the Indian Wells event in March.
