Emily Maitlis apologises for ‘hurt caused’ after retweeting criticism of Nadine Dorries’ car crash interview

Newsnight star Emily Maitlis has apologised after retweeting criticism of Nadine Dorries’ Channel 4 interview.
The Culture Secretary was interviewed by Channel 4 after Boris Johnson spoke in the House of Commons and was widely criticised after he made false claims against Sir Keir Starmer.
It was branded a ‘car crash’ and compared to a Catherine Tate sketch.
Author and former politician Rory Stewart retweeted the clip, writing: ‘The sheer tawdry Trumpian shabbiness of the whole thing – it is difficult to see how much more of this the party or our political system can survive.’
Maitlis retweeted his message, adding: ‘I have deleted my earlier retweet of the below and would like to apologise for the hurt I have caused.’
She went on to say: ‘For the avoidance of doubt I accept I should have added extra context – it was retweeted in haste – and was wrong to do.’
Channel 4 News presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy interviewed Dorries following the PM speaking to parliament addressing the findings of the Sue Gray report, investigating a number of alleged parties being held in Downing Street during the pandemic.
At one point, Mr Johnson falsely accused the Opposition Leader of being behind the failure to prosecute sexual predator Jimmy Savile.
However, during the exchange with Guru-Muthy, Dorries repeatedly shook her head and rolled her eyes, and insisted she ‘didn’t know the details.’
The slightly confusing interview ended with Dorries repeating the phrase back to Guru-Murthy and said: ‘The prime minister tells the truth.’

Many took to social media after the awkward moment went viral, and people associated Dorries’ remarks with Lauren’s notable catchphrase: ‘Am I bovvered?’
One person wrote: ‘Has anyone dubbed Catherine Tate’s Lauren character voice over a Nadine Dorries clip yet? If not, please do.’
