James McAvoy reveals he secretly married longtime partner Lisa Liberati

James McAvoy has revealed he got married in the most low key way possible.

The actor, who first met his partner Lisa Liberati on the set of the film Split, casually confirmed he’s tied the knot during a chat with The Guardian.

Asked if he’s now an honorary Philadelphian due to Lisa hailing from the American city, he responded: ‘Yeah, it’s like a second home for me.’

However, the  42-year-old star declined to comment further on their relationship.

James met Lisa, who was director M Night Shyamalan’s PA at the time, on the set of Split in 2016, when the Scottish actor was playing Kevin Wendell Crumb, a character with 23 different personalities.

They went Instagram official in 2017, with a source saying at the time: ‘James and Lisa are having a lot of fun together and behave like a pair of lovestruck teenagers when they are together.

‘They both love partying and are regularly all over each other when they go out together. It’s no secret amongst their social group that they are together and everyone thinks they are a great fit.’

James was previously married to actress Anne-Marie Duff, from 2006 to 2016, with the pair sharing their 11-year-old son Brendan.

The actor and Lisa currently live in London, but James revealed his roots are still in Glasgow, where he was born and raised.

He said: ‘It’s where I was born, where I grew up.

‘I’ve still got a place there and all my family there. I see myself as a Glaswegian and a Londoner – a Glaswegian Londoner.’

In 2015, James pledged a substantial sum for a 10-year scholarship programme at his old drama school, which is now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, but insisted it was more about broadening students’ horizons than creating a future generation of actors.

He explained: ‘I don’t really care if all the people who have been through the scholarship process end up becoming actors or not.

‘It would be a symptom of things getting better if our stages and screens continued to be diverse for the next 40, 50 or 100 years.

‘But being exposed to art at an early age is not about creating artists – it’s about creating better people who are more able to communicate and feel worth something. Art, in all forms, allows you to see beyond your physical confines. If you do that then anything’s possible.’
