Warning: today’s Wordle answer uses American spelling

Wordle fans are up in arms again because the latest puzzle uses American spelling, even though the creator and website are British.

If you haven’t tried today’s Wordle puzzle yet you might want to be careful because although the answer is a five letter word in the US it’s not when it comes to the Queen’s English.

This has happened before, when fans got upset that a previous answer was ‘favor’ instead of ‘favour’. They were especially put out because there’s no warning on the website as to which language is being used and since the creator and website is British there’s nothing to suggest it would be American.

We’ll tell you what the answer is below, if you want to know, but as a hint it’s the same problem as with favour, in that the American version of the word doesn’t have a ‘u’ in it.

The reason the spelling is American is that while the original creator of the game is British the list of words he’s used to generate the puzzles was compiled by an American.

Also, obviously, the US has a much larger population and since creator Josh Wardle ended up selling Wordle to The New York Times for a seven figure sum the American spelling turned out to be a good choice for him in the end.

It would’ve been nice if the website acknowledged the language setting though, since anyone going in blind today is probably not going to get the answer, even though it’s a very common word.
