“Was Hurting People I Love”: Chloe Kim Makes A Heartbreaking Confession About Her Mental Health Issues

Chloe Kim created history at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. With a gold in the half-pipe event, Kim returned the silver lining from an otherwise grey Olympics for team USA. The athlete however spoke at length about her mental health in her press conference after her win. The pressures that an athlete goes through is pretty tough for any ordinary person to imagine. Specifically when you imagine an event like the Olympics for whom the frequency too is not quite as sure as any other athletic event. And Chloe Kim made clear that the travails of an Olympics can truly put tremendous pressure on an athlete even as accomplished as herself.

Chloe Kim managed to put together a stunning run to take home the Gold in the half-pipe event; in an Olympics where many US athletes disappointed in their runs, many without even completing the course. However, standing as a beacon in bleak times, Kim braved the slopes to deliver; and her message for the world in her post win press conference is a message to athletes out there. She spoke in part about the pressure that she had on her and how she dealt with it in the past and more specifically maybe how she wrongly dealt with it in the past. She also put together a cogent strategy to tackle the low moments of any athlete speaking hopefully to any younger girls out there.

Chloe Kim addresses mental health in press-conference

Speaking about her immediate performance in the event, Kim said that the whole run felt sort of “unreal” to her as the practice had not been upto her standard.

She then went on to address the biggest lesson she learnt from her last Olympics. Stating that her biggest learning was to be as open as possible.

“It’s unfair to be expected to be perfect, and I’m not perfect in any way”, added Kim. But as any athlete, it seems as though she put the pressure on herself after her last run in the Olympics. The athlete went on to add that it even seemed to cause some issues at her home. “I would be really sad and depressed all the time when I was home”, added Kim. And that’s not all either. “I was hurting the people I love by doing that,” said Kim, speaking about her loved ones at home who didn’t like to see her like that.

Setting herself a target for the future, Kim committed to a cause. “I just want to be as open as I can in the future“, said Kim, hoping that her example can inspire young women all over the world to “keep going.
