I feel like a mug because I always give lifts to my drunk friends
DEAR DEIDRE: I MUST have “mug” written across my forehead.
My sister and best friend only ever call me if they want something – and they are usually drunk.
I always go out to get my sister but I’m starting to feel used as she never calls when sober

I’m a man of 25 and my sister is 29. She lives with her boyfriend and he’s abusive.
She rings me a few times a week, off her face on booze begging for a lift, normally after a fight with her fella.
I always go out to get her but I’m starting to feel used as she never calls when sober. She’s made comments about him pushing her around and her drinking is out of control.

My best mate’s as bad, and has even rung me to pick him up from the police station. He doesn’t work and I know he sometimes drinks vodka in the mornings.
They both need help but why come to me?

Your sister can find help through The National Domestic Abuse Helpline (nationaldahelpline.org.uk, 0808 2000 247).
Tell both of them separately that you are concerned about their drinking and they need professional help.
My support pack Drink Problem will show them where to find help.
