DK Metcalf Opens Up On His Mental State During Poor Seattle Seahawks 2021 Season: ‘We Were Losing And I Was Battling With a Lot of Old Habits’

The 2021 season did not come to fruition for the Seattle Seahawks and receiver DK Metcalf. The franchise went through a lot of adversity, especially after the injury of Russell Wilson, and the frustration was seemingly obvious, judging by the temper of DK. 

The 24-year-old wideout was not happy with the way the Seahawks trudged through the season. In his recent interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks, he mentioned“We were losing, and I was battling with a lot of old habits that I was doing like last year.”

DK Metcalf had a few on field outbursts this season. But he’s grown… thanks to a conversation with Bobby Wagner on the plane AND going to therapy – using coping mechanisms during games.

He stated how he used to get away with misconduct in the field through his first two seasons. But after those two successful seasons in the league, he was under the spotlight this time, because of which he was picked even for the smallest of mistakes. With all the factors playing in from time to time, DK being a vehement player by nature took a mental toll.

It was after his Week 10 clash with the Green Bay Packers that prompted him to make a decision. A decision that would later change his outlook towards life. According to DK, on his way back home, veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner told him, “Look, you’re not the same DK, you’re not a rookie no more. You’re not a second-year player. Like you’re a superstar.”

Metcalf further stated that after a lot of introspection, he went for therapy, emphasizing that mental health is as important as physical. He said, that after committing to therapy he has come a long way in battling his bad habits. He even mentioned how meditation has helped him stay calm and maintain composure at times of intense rage.

Watching Metcalf discover a new dimension of life, should pose as an inspiration for many others. He already seemed so poised throughout the interview, which certainly reflects all his hard work off the field, in shaping his mind the right way. Metcalf came a long way in transforming himself, and it will just be a delight to watch him play next season.

Mental health has been an emphasis in sports this past year. With gymnast Simone Biles stepping away from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And now Metcalf addressing this sensitive topic as a hero, just proves that it’s something of major concern among athletes.
