There’s a stunning Netflix account of Kanye West’s ferocious rise through the music world sitting alongside a return to crime-ridden Sweden being sorted out by a young Wallander.

The bid for the US presidency didn’t quite come off but you can bet that won’t have dented the unstoppable ego that is Kanye ‘Ye’ West.

Yet while it’s easy to take a pop at West’s inflated idea of himself, there’s no denying his track record as one of hip hop’s most influential talents and you get both sides of the coin in this epic account of a career that started out as a struggling Chicago producer before going on to global domination (well, in his mind at least).

Young Wallander

Once you’ve got your head around the idea that Young Wallander is set after the Old Wallander would have retired (not exactly sure how that works), this spin-off from the beloved Henning Mankell detective stories has much to recommend it, not least Adam Pålsson in the title role.

Pålsson brings the right mix of intellect and cynicism to our hero as he sleuths through six episodes, which night-crawl around sleazy Sweden.

By sheer power of performance Rachel Brosnahan convinces us that Midge Maisel could make it as a stand-up, even though the material she’s wisecracking is mostly honey to a heckler.

Yes, the lively period drama that nimbly sidesteps its central conceit is back to see how much higher Midge can clamber up the showbiz ladder.

And there’s more of her scene-stealing parents than ever before as dire straits force them to move into Midge’s apartment. Hasn’t the poor girl suffered enough?

Small really is beautiful in this latest twist on the crafty talent show. We’re talking doll’s houses, expertly designed and intricately detailed with the kind of passion that would have Pottery Keith weeping buckets.

Luckily judges Michael Lambie and Emma Waddell are made of (slightly) sterner stuff.
